Are You and Your Baby Struggling With Colic?

If so, we’re here to help.

Born Free is leading an ongoing initiative aimed at educating expectant and new mums about colic–a condition that often confuses and concerns parents. We have declared March as Colic Awareness Month and started this forum to provide caregivers with support and suggestions to help reduce colic symptoms. Our Born Free® Feeding System aids in reducing colic symptoms.

To learn how colic affected them, a recent survey* asked 100 mums to describe how their baby’s colic (which averaged 4.7 weeks) made them feel. The results were more extreme than you might think:

  • Nearly 3/4 of the mums said that they felt as if they were failing as a parent when they were not able to make their baby feel better.
  • More than 1/3 of mums surveyed said that having a baby with colic greatly contributed to their post-natal depression.
  • More than 1/3 of those surveyed said that having a baby with colic made them doubt whether they wanted another baby.
  • Nearly one in five mums said that having a baby with colic nearly led to a divorce.

The consensus was that parents with colicky babies feel overwhelmed and stressed. Adding to that stress, there is so much unreliable information that it’s hard to know what to do to safely soothe your baby. Most mums in the survey reported trying at least seven different ways to soothe their colicky infant (with limited success), and some of them received a lot of well-meaning advice that didn’t help at all.

Help You Can Use
While no one can cure colic, there are some things you can do to help manage it. In addition to the five S’s (swaddling, side/stomach holding, shushing, swinging, and sucking), there are some new, innovative products that can help you sooth your baby. One of these is the Born Free® Feeding System with its ActiveFlow™ Venting Technology.

In a recent study, 100 mums with colicky babies switched from their current bottle system to Born Free for one week. Their experiences were pretty interesting:

  • 100% of the mums reported that Born Free helped ease their baby's colic symptoms.
  • 100% of the mums said they would continue to use Born Free to feed their baby even after the study was over.
  • More than 90% of participating mums rated Born Free as “excellent” or “good” for helping reduce some of baby’s colic symptoms.

In fact, mums reported that Born Free rated significantly stronger for helping with all colic symptoms compared to their current bottle system. And they gave high marks to Born Free for functional bottle attributes, including ease of use, overall bottle quality, ease of holding bottle, ease of assembly, and ease of cleaning.

What Else Can You Try? There are a number of natural ways you can care for and soothe your colicky baby. And while taking care of baby, remember that it’s just as important to care of yourself.
